The tropical north of Australia is facing a growing public health crisis as mosquito-borne viruses surge, fueled by climate change and rapid urban development. But here's where it gets controversial: while dengue, Ross River, and Barmah Forest viruses are the most concerning, over 900 unclassified flaviviruses, spread by ticks and mosquitoes, have been found across the country, including more than 100 in Queensland alone. This highlights a detection gap that needs to be addressed.
According to research from James Cook University (JCU), the number of national mosquito-borne virus cases nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024, with trends persisting into 2025. The longer transmission seasons are attributed to climate change, abundant urban breeding habitats, and proximity to Southeast Asia.
Queensland reported 1,701 Ross River virus infections and 378 dengue cases in 2024, plus detections of chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis viruses. Wolbachia controls have curbed dengue, but broader threats persist, said Associate Professor Subir Sarker, urging expanded programs with next-generation sequencing and community engagement.
But this is the part most people miss: the unclassified flaviviruses, which are spread by ticks and mosquitoes, pose an unknown risk. Over 900 of these viruses have been found across Australia over recent decades, and the detection gap needs to be addressed to prevent future outbreaks.
