These naval assets were repositioned by President Trump after Tehran's severe response to the anti-government demonstrations.
President Trump has frequently suggested that Iran is eager to engage in negotiations, particularly concerning its nuclear program, which he aims to see resolved.
However, Ayatollah Khamenei has characterized the nationwide protests as a "coup," a stance that solidifies the government's firm position. This comes at a time when reports indicate tens of thousands of individuals have been detained since the protests began.

"Of course, the coup was suppressed," Ayatollah Khamenei stated, elaborating on the protestors' alleged actions. "Their goal was to destroy sensitive and effective centres involved in running the country and for this reason they attacked the police, government centres, [Revolutionary Guard] facilities, banks and mosques — and burned copies of the Koran. They targeted centres that run the country."
And this is the part most people miss: Ayatollah Khamenei's warning about a US attack carries significant weight. "The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war," he declared.
When questioned about the Iranian leader's pronouncement, President Trump responded to reporters by saying, "Of course he is going to say that." He added, "Hopefully we'll make a deal. If we don't make a deal, then we'll find out whether or not he was right."
A significant development has been the European Union's decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This move has prompted a strong reaction from Iranian politicians, who have retaliated by applying the same designation to European armies. Iran has acknowledged the deaths of thousands during the protests. On Sunday, the presidency released a list of 2,986 names out of the 3,117 individuals authorities claim were killed in the unrest. Of these, 131 are still unidentified, with their details expected to be published soon. Authorities assert that the majority of those killed were security forces and innocent civilians, attributing the violence to "terrorist acts." However, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports confirming 6,713 deaths, predominantly protestors.
Amidst these developments, President Trump reiterated that dialogue is ongoing, stating, "we'll see what happens," without retracting his earlier threats. He has previously expressed his belief that Iran would opt for a deal regarding its nuclear and missile programs rather than face military confrontation. Tehran, conversely, has indicated readiness for nuclear talks, provided that its missile and defense capabilities are not part of the discussion.
The US Navy currently has six destroyers, one aircraft carrier, and three littoral combat ships stationed in the region. President Trump has outlined two critical thresholds for military action: the killing of peaceful protesters or the potential mass execution of those detained during the crackdown.
