The world of wellness is getting a Roman-inspired twist with the launch of Alchemy Saunas' flagship location in East Fremantle, Western Australia. This innovative sauna brand has taken over a heritage-listed building, the Royal George Hotel, and transformed it into a modern-day bathhouse with a unique twist.
The vision, as co-founder James Browne puts it, is to create a space that pays homage to the ancient Roman bathhouses while adding an 'Alchemy twist.' With its high ceilings, limestone archways, and vast corridors, the Royal George provides the perfect canvas for this ambitious project.
"The beauty of the venue is in the fabric of the building," Browne explains. "We wanted to preserve the building's heritage and give it a new lease of life as a wellness hub."
The new two-storey development offers an immersive experience, activating the entire facility. Sauna-goers can now enjoy a communal social space, expanded sauna facilities, a steam room, and retail offerings. But the real highlight is Alchemy's first 50,000-litre ice pool, flanked by a hot magnesium pool, inspired by the historic bathhouses of ancient Rome.
"We're bringing an iconic building back to life for the East Fremantle community," Browne says. "The Royal George has been a key part of local history for over a century, and we're excited to continue that legacy."
The renovations have uncovered several artifacts, including metal horseshoes and old menus, which Browne plans to display as a tribute to the site's rich heritage. "We want people to understand the process and the story behind the building," he adds.
Alchemy Saunas began as a humble backyard experiment in Fremantle, but it has since grown into a renowned wellness brand with multiple locations across WA. The brand's popularity surge is driven by a growing wellness movement, with saunas known to offer physical and mental health benefits, from improving cardiovascular function to reducing stress.
"The response to our saunas has been incredible," Browne says. "We're thrilled to be able to offer this unique experience to the community."
While membership allocations for the flagship center are currently exhausted, casual drop-in sessions will be available to ensure everyone has a chance to experience the new space. The opening weekend will be celebrated with free coffees, giveaways, and music, creating a festive atmosphere for members and the local community.
"Every new location becomes our flagship because we strive to make each one better than the last," Browne concludes. "But this one is special - it's where it all began, and it feels like coming home."
